An interview with Aragma Owners Tony & Bex

You are a husband & wife team. How long have you been working together?

We first starting working together back in 2007 when Bex was working as the manager at Tony’s cafe in the bay of San Antonio, here in Ibiza. Then in 2012 they went into business together to open Tapas Ibiza. And the rest as they say, is history.

How do you find working together? what are the pro’s and con’s? Can you ever really switch off?

Truthfully, it can be really hard to switch off sometimes. We always end up chatting about work. But it is something we are constantly working on. Generally we really enjoy working together. It is great that we are always there to help and support each other at every step.

Why did you decide to open another restaurant?

Apparently, it’s all Tony’s fault!!

It is something we have been thinking about for a while. We just wanted to wait for the right time and the right opportunity. And when we saw Aragma we saw the potential straight away.

We love the concept of tapas, sharing lot of interesting small plates. And wanted to explore this concept with a different cuisine.
We are also extremely fortunate to have an exceptional team behind us. Without them, none of this would be possible. It also provides a great opportunity for the team, and us, to be able to grow together.

Why did you decide on the Greek Mediterranean small plates concept?

It was actually a very quick and easy decision. Mainly because our Executive Chef Alex is himself Greek. He was our head chef at Tapas, and over the years has created several dishes that have a Greek influences to them. The customer response has always been fantastic. So Greek it is…

You also own the popular restaurant Tapas Ibiza? What is your secret to success?

Honestly it is no big secret, our focus has always been to make sure the customers and the staff really enjoy being at the restaurant. Without either of them we wouldn’t have anything.

We continually look at ways to improve and grow. And listen to our entire team to get feedback from them on how we can ensure they have everything they need to do their job well. If they are all happy, then that will filter over to our customers too.

What do you like to do in your downtime?

We really enjoy the quiet side of the island when we aren’t working. We enjoy going on nice walks, lazy afternoons at the beach followed by a nice lunch. We both enjoy reading and snuggles on the sofa with our lovely dog Dana.

Other than your restaurants, which is your favourite restaurant on the island?

People often ask us this. And it is a really hard question. There are so many lovely restaurants on the island. It’s  hard to pick just one. Our go to restaurants when we have family & friends visiting are usually Es Virot or Kasbah.

And finally which is your favourite beach on the island?

Cala Tarida is our favourite. Not only is it quite local to us, the water there is amazing.
